The best (or worst) security breaches of 2010

Very soon now -- probably in a year or two -- once everyone carries a smartphone, there won't be any discernible difference between our offline flesh-and-blood body and our online persona. That's not to say that real-life face-to-face interaction will slither into the abyss -- far from it! -- but we are reaching a stage where almost anything can be done online.

This obviously raises security concerns. If I can transfer money out of my bank account with just a name and password, so can you. That isn't to say that online security is worse than offline, however. SSL-encrypted communications are infinitely more secure than banking over the phone, or speaking in hushed tones in a brick-and-mortar bank. Passwords are a lot more secure than merely providing a 4-digit PIN or a mother's maiden name, too.

The actual problem is databases, or centralized repositories of information. It's no good having a password to your account if a nefarious types hacks a bank and takes all of the accounts. Likewise, putting your bag in a locker doesn't help if someone lifts the entire block of lockers into a truck and drives off.

2010 was a bad year for digital security breaches, and it won't get better until every organization and institution hires a security specialist and puts proper safeguards in place. This post, then, is dedicated to the organizations and institutions that left the barn door open in 2010 -- shame on you!Continue reading The best (or worst) security breaches of 2010The best (or worst) security breaches of 2010 originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 29 Dec 2010 15:30:00 EST. Wifi Analyzer for Android helps you pick the best channel for your Wi-Fi network

Most people rarely think about this, but your Wi-Fi hot-spot is actually broadcasting its signal on something called a channel. In North America, you can pick one of 11 channels; in most of the world you can pick one of 13.
Still, most routers and access points come with a pre-set default (that appears to be 11, at least for the routers around me). When you have several routers broadcasting on the same channel, this can lead to some interference and a performance hit. If you live somewhere fairly isolated and your Wi-Fi signal is the only one in range, you've got nothing to worry about.
On the other hand, if you're trying to survive in a dense urban jungle, surrounded by paper-thin walls and lots of Wi-Fi-using neighbors, you may gain a bit of a performance boost by switching your access point's channel to a less congested one.
Wifi Analyzer is an Android application that helps you figure out exactly what that channel is. The screenshot to the right shows how channels 9 and 10 are occupied by a couple of wireless network fighting over the same frequency, while my network (the red one) lives comfortably on channel 1.
Wifi analyzer offers several views, including a simple "channel rating" screen with no graph, if you just want to quickly figure out what's the best channel for you. A beautiful app, and free. QR code is after the jump.Continue reading Wifi Analyzer for Android helps you pick the best channel for your Wi-Fi networkWifi Analyzer for Android helps you pick the best channel for your Wi-Fi network originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 15:30:00 EST. Kodachrome film is seriously at the end of its life -- again

Kodachrome film is iconic enough that there have now been several 'goodbye, Kodachrome' news stories, and we just couldn't resist one more. This time, our tale is of Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, Kansas (which we've had occasion to reference once before), a film processing store which has the distinction of being the final place to accept Kodachrome for development. The problem? The store has been flooded with packages of undeveloped film from all over the world as the window for its processing comes to an end. It turns out that having that distinction will get you hundreds of rolls of film a day, and Dwayne's Photo said that it would not process any films that arrived after Thursday. Yes, that was yesterday, though the mail is undoubtedly still arriving.Kodachrome film is seriously at the end of its life -- again originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 13:45:00 EDT. ASUS EP121, EP102, EP101, and EP71 tablets get diagramed in latest teaser

Haven't had enough CES titillation yet? Good. ASUS has apparently been up to some mischief overnight in uploading and then pulling a new version of its teaser video from a week ago, though this time it also included explicit product names attached to some quite informative diagrams. It looks to be the full family of upcoming CES tablets, with the EP121 touting stylus input and a wireless keyboard, the EP102 showing that there will indeed be a slider in ASUS' Pad family, and the EP101 looking like, well, a laptop. There's also a media-centric EP71, whose proportions make it seem likely to be a sort of oversized PMP. Skip past the break for a closer look at them all and don't forget to grace our comments with your theory as to why ASUS feels compelled to have such a segmented product offering.Continue reading ASUS EP121, EP102, EP101, and EP71 tablets get diagramed in latest teaserASUS EP121, EP102, EP101, and EP71 tablets get diagramed in latest teaser originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 10:32:00 EDT. Opera 11 downloaded 6.7 million times on day one -- thanks to the power of bacon

While Opera 11's warm reception had a lot to do with a greatly improved browser and a very loyal fan base, the boys in Oslo had one clever trick up their sleeve which they saved for launch day. And with nearly 7 million downloads in 24 hours, you've got to hand it to Opera: they know how to tempt a geek.

How'd they do it? By dangling delicious bacon in front of Reddit users. You've got to admit, the Opera 11 Web advert is at least as enticing as those Evony ads -- you know which ones I'm talking about.

As for those of us who already tried Opera 11 and knew it was a solid browser... well, if you're like me, you're probably just craving some sizzlin' hot bacon right about now.

Porn in the United Kingdom to become opt-in

Not one to let the hyperconservative Australian government walk away with the censorship crown, the UK government plans to make the surfing of Internet porn opt-in. Next month, Communications Minister Ed Vaizey will meet with major UK ISPs to discuss a blanket block of porn. Rather than porn being available to all, UK surfers will have to contact their ISP to be allowed on a 'porn surfing whitelist.'

In customary political masquerading style, this is being pushed through as a "think of the kids!!" measure. It recently emerged that as many as one-in-three children under 10 in the UK has seen pornography on the Internet, and the government, spearheaded by Conservative MP Claire Perry, wants to protect those kids at all costs. The irony is, it's not like 10-year-olds have their own computers and Internet connections -- they are either viewing porn at home, at a friend's house, or at school. If dad, or mom, opts into the porn whitelist, we're back at square one.

Of course, the other option is that mom and dad swear off the porn altogether, for the sake of the children. But is that really a fair system? Isn't that just censorship, dressed up as something else?

"Oh, yeah, we're making alcohol opt-in too. Most children are abused by drunken parents... and you don't want to abuse your kids, right?" While we're at it, how about a special ID card that lets you buy pornographic magazines and DVDs from shops? Why should the Internet be treated differently?

Seriously, the reasoning behind this program is that porn is damaging to children. As in, on a mental health level, children are being scarred by the early viewing of porn. Why porn, instead of violent imagery? Is porn really more perverse than the face-planting, gonad-thumping masochism readily available on YouTube? Will video games be next, and will you have to carry them in brown paper bags?Porn in the United Kingdom to become opt-in originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 20 Dec 2010 07:00:00 EST. Montage from Microsoft Labs introduces user-curated online magazines

In recent years, there has been a massive surge in popularity for audio-visual communication. Driven by an ever-increasing flow of data, the audio and visual channels are really our only recourse; reading text simply isn't fast enough. YouTube videos, Flash games and sites, infographics -- all of these, and more, are popular because of our limited bandwidth for the written word. It's almost like our brains breathe a sigh of relief when we can sit back and look at a picture or listen to some audio, rather than parsing word after word after word.

Microsoft in general (Bing!) and its FUSE Labs in particular have obviously noticed this trend towards visualization. Pivot, Kodu, Project Emporia and Spindex all have strong visual elements -- and its new project, Montage, is perhaps the most visual yet. Montage advertises itself as a tool that lets you share "your visual album of the Web," and that's exactly what it does. Take a look at some albums that other people have already made, such as the True Blood, or Jude Law.

The best bit is the Montage editor, however. Anyone can make a new album; all you have to do is type in a topic, and play with the beautiful browser-based editor. Each panel can be a different type -- text, video, RSS or news feed, Twitter stream, etc. -- and you can drag and drop each part of the layout until you're satisfied.

In short, it's a lovely toy to play with, and there's also the massive added bonus that its output is both functional and beautiful.Montage from Microsoft Labs introduces user-curated online magazines originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 13:00:00 EST. Islamophobia is a Major Problem in US

Rachel Slajda, Talking Points MemoNine years after Sept. 11, 2001, America saw perhaps its worst outbreak of Islamophobia since the attacks. Experts wagered it came from the aimless fear and the anger people feel in times of economic crisis, exploited by certain politicians looking to give their party an advantage in the midterms and turned toward American Muslims.Such an outbreak was possible in the days and months after Sept. 11's attacks. It never really materialized, experts say, in part because President George W. Bush stood up and told the nervous country that Islam is a religion of peace, and that American...

Netflix to go international in 2011?

Over at Cnet, Don Reisinger is reporting that Netflix is positioning itself for international expansion. The service finally made the jump from the U.S. to Canada this year, and CEO Reed Hastings has said that move "has provided us with very encouraging signs regarding the potential for the Netflix service internationally." Spokesperson Steve Swasey recently told a CBC interviewer "based on the early success of Netflix.ca we're going to continue our international expansion next year and we're going to allocate significant dollars to it."

Netflix has been extremely successful in transforming itself from a video-by-mail service into one of the key players in video on demand. Hastings admits that Netflix's focus has shifted to streaming, and that it's time to begin looking outside North America. According to AdWeek, the company is now having exploratory discussions with advertising and media agencies around the globe to lay the groundwork their next expansion.

The company, of course, will have competitors to deal with overseas -- like the very popular Lovefilm in Europe. How Netflix will fare there -- as opposed to Canada where the service had no real competition -- remains to be seen.

The Uncertain Variables in Afghanistan

David Ignatius, Washington PostIf briefings could win wars, Gen. David Petraeus would already be finished in Afghanistan. Here's what his masterful presentation looked like in Kabul this month -- and then some hard questions for him to answer. The general's aides come in first, carrying six wooden easels as if they're setting up an art display. Next come the charts, four feet tall, displaying an array of information as densely woven as a spider's web. And then into the room sweeps Petraeus, greeting his audience in a manner at once genial and pugnacious.

The world's first store for 3D printed goods just opened in Brussels, and while we imagine they've already got a fair selection of prototyped merchandise to choose, might we suggest they invest in a few production runs of this fabulous new flute? Directing an Objet Connex500 3D printer (which can handle multiple materials at the same time) to spit out his CAD design, dollop by tiny dollop, in a single 15-hour run, he merely had to wash off support material, add springs, and assemble four printed pieces to finish the instrument up. Favorites like Firefox, Chrome, Skype, Dropbox, 7-zip, and Microsoft Security Essentials are all there for the downloading. The only one of my core apps I found absent was Sugarsync -- all of my other required apps are listed.

Honda, Acura customer data stolen in third-party breach

The last couple months of this year are starting to look like Breachfest 2010, and a new report in The Columbus Dispatch indicates that the latest victims are registered owners of Honda and Acura vehicles. As was the case with the McDonald's incident, it wasn't Honda or Acura specifically that was attacked -- but rather a third-party company who handled a customer email database.

In addition to the usual information like names and email addresses, the data also contained customer VINs (vehicle identification numbers). Armed with a VIN, it could be possible for a thief to obtain duplicate keys -- which is obviously very, very bad. It's more likely, however, that the data will be used to carry out phishing attacks. Armed with knowledge of the customers' vehicles, the phisher could pose as a Honda representative in an attempt to trick users into running a malicious attachment.

Honda has already reached out to all those affected -- some 2.2 million people. The company has also added a new section to its FAQ, which you can read here.Honda, Acura customer data stolen in third-party breach originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 29 Dec 2010 09:30:00 EST. Cost of 'Free' Lunches is Killing Us

Thomas Sowell, Investor's Business DailyEconomists are the real "party of No." They keep saying that there is no such thing as a free lunch-- and politicians keep on getting elected by promising free lunches. Such promises may seem to be kept, for a while. There are ways the government can juggle money around to make everything look OK, but it is only a matter of time before that money runs out and the ultimate reality hits, that there is no free lunch.

Windows Phone 7 "Mango" may add HTML5, Silverlight support to WP7's browser

Over at ZDNet, Mary Jo Foley has been speculating about the future of Windows Phone 7. According to Foley, a major update is due around Jan/Feb 2011, adding copy/paste functionality and two major browsing enhancements: HTML 5 support and a Silverlight plug-in. Foley also wonders whether enterprise tweaks might be part of the game plan as well. Microsoft, of course, doesn't comment on rumors -- so we'll have to wait for someone to score some hands-on time with the WP7 update.

Despite the update's appetizing codename, Microsoft doesn't seem to be converging on a single food-related theme for its Windows Phone OS. The next release, Windows Phone 8, is codenamed "Apollo". We can only hope 8.5 will be codenamed "Starbuck".

Bear in mind this is all sheer speculation; however, after Windows Phone 7's somewhat lackluster launch, any sort of improvement could be exciting.Windows Phone 7 "Mango" may add HTML5, Silverlight support to WP7's browser originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 07:30:00 EST. Send links from any browser to any smartphone -- with just a bookmarklet

The world's most graceful and simple solution for pushing links to your smartphone has just emerged. It's called Site to Phone, and it works for every major Web browser. Theoretically, it works for every smartphone OS, too; iOS, webOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry -- and maybe even Symbian.

Instead of requiring Chrome, or being restricted to just Android or iOS, this solution uses the most basic technologies ever: a JavaScript bookmarklet, and a website bookmark on your phone. It's so stupefyingly simple: the bookmarklet sends your current website to Site to Phone, and when you click the bookmark on your phone, you are redirected to that site. You put the Site to Phone bookmark on your phone's home screen, so it's always just one tap away.

If you don't want to use a bookmarklet, you can just visit the Site to Phone website and paste a link in -- once you save it, the link is immediately active on your phone. There is also a Chrome extension or Internet Explorer add-on, if you prefer.

It's hard to describe just how well it works; it's best if you just give it a go yourself. You don't even have to register: just visit Site to Phone, begin the process, and then type a unique URL into your phone. So, so easy.Send links from any browser to any smartphone -- with just a bookmarklet originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. Trend Micro Browser Guard protects against zero-day critical flaws in Internet Explorer

With so many types of Internet threats to watch out for nowadays, it's important to have a multi-layered defense in place. A good antimalware program is a start, but it won't protect you against everything -- like some zero-day exploits such as the new one reported by Microsoft which affects Internet Explorer.

Trend Micro's Browser Guard offers additional protection for users of Microsoft's Web browser, and best of all it's totally free. Install Browser Guard and it resides in your system tray and integrates into Internet Explorer, where it scans for malicious Web code. Browser Guard taps into Trend's Smart Protection Network, which uses the power of their antimalware cloud to defend against emerging threats. The plug-in won't slow down your browser, but it will add a toolbar (which really isn't necessary). Still, giving up a few pixels of space in exchange for some added protection is a decent trade off if you're a devoted Internet Explorer user.

Java Lives

What does the future of Java look like? Many say Java is reaching the end of its life, while others go so far as to say Java is dead. Will Java become Cobol, an antique enterprise platform too entrenched to get rid of, but no longer relevant? Will Oracle's takeover of Java prove to be the final nail in the Java coffin? Does it still make sense to build new-generation Web applications on Java?.

No Lock for Android disables "slide to unlock" keyguard

My Android device has a tiny power button, and it's usually in a holster. Really, what are the odds of me turning it on accidentally?
If you purchased previously reviewed power-tool Tasker, you can use it to selectively disable the slide to unlock feature, amongst the myriad of other things it can do.
However, if you didn't purchase Tasker, or are just looking for a quick and free solution, No Lock might be right up your alley.
This no-frills app presents a huge button you can press to toggle the keyguard. When the keyguard is off, you need only press the power button on your device to start interacting with it - no sliding involved.
There's also a handy 1x1 widget you can put on your homescreen and tap whenever you want to toggle the keyguard. The only feature I wish it had is a "dual button" unlock, whereby I can press the power button and then the camera button to unlock; I think that could definitely keep me from switching the device on accidentally. Still, for most cases, No Lock gets the job done. You can find its QR code after the jump.Continue reading No Lock for Android disables "slide to unlock" keyguardNo Lock for Android disables "slide to unlock" keyguard originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 10:30:00 EST. VLC Media player set to arrive on Android early 2011

The multitude of VLC compatible apps already in the Android Market is pretty amazing. The fact those apps exist at the level in which they do already shows there is demand for VLC to be on Android. Yes it's true, some most are just remote apps but that shows people use VLC enough to even care. Now, the news comes that VLC will be releasing an Android App come early 2011.According to sources, the developers have been hard at work on VLC for Android for months now but have been thus far defeated by its Java system limitations. The improvements made within Gingerbread and the Android NDK now allows development to chug on with no issues but, what does that mean for device not currently running gingerbread?  The only thing I can really say is, while the idea of VLC on Android seems great, the iOS launch was plagued with bugs and well, never really gave that "It's VLC it'll play a pop tart if I tell it to" feel. While it is working better now, I'd be just as happy waiting longer for the Android version so that it can be fully baked. Obama Losing His War on Inequality

Jacob Weisberg, SlateWasn't reversing the decades-long trend toward income inequality supposed to be the big theme of the Obama administration? The new president sounded it strongly in his inaugural address, stating that "a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous." He followed up with a 2010 budget proposal that sought, in the words of the New York Times' David Leonhardt, "to reverse the rapid increase in economic inequality over the last 30 years." Obama has raised the issue at major occasions since, including his first State of the Union address in...

Mobclix: Android Impressions Grew By 420 Percent In 2010; iPhone Up 347 Percent

Recently acquired mobile ad exchange Mobclix is releasing its 2010 report, which takes a look at the top trend in the mobile advertising space. 2010 has been a big year for mobile advertising companies and startups, with the Google-AdMob deal approved, Apple's Quattro buy and iAds launch, Millennial's fast growth and more. Unsurprisingly, the trend that tops Mobclix's report is the platform war between Apple and Google over the iPhone versus Android. Mobclix says that impressions on Android phones via Mobclix's platform grew by 420 percent over the past year whereas iPhone impressions grew by 347 percent for the same 12 month period.

Another interesting trend highlighted by the report is that real-time bidding for mobile ad space is becoming more widely adopted by publishers and developers as the optimal way to fill space. Mobclix says that real time bidding inventory is expected to make up 10% ? 15% of total ad buys for 2011. In fact, 50% of all targeted online ad display platforms will be powered through real time platforms by 2015.

Monster sues Fanny Wang, purveyor of fine knockoff headphones

Monster Cable's reign of legal terror has resulted in several things over the years -- a tiff with the Chicago Bears over the "Monsters of the Midway" nickname, a lawsuit against a minigolf company, and eventually even a hard ban on the pages of Engadget -- but we can't say we ever expected the target of a Monster lawsuit to try and use the case for cheap free publicity. Well, surprises come in all forms: the delightfully-named Fanny Wang is now proudly proclaiming that it's being sued for copying Monster's Beats headphones and trying to score some free good press -- even though it appears that Fanny's headphones are indeed a fairly close copy of Beats. (Just check the image above.)

To give you an idea of the ridiculousness at work, Fanny's presently hosting a copy of the Beats design patent and Monster's complaint on its own website, right next to a rebuttal of the charges. Fanny claims its headphones have different packaging and minor design differences such that "no reasonable consumer would likely confuse the two," which we suppose is arguably true -- but we'd also point out that Fanny's original press release proudly proclaims that "the same sound engineer who designed the Beats by Dr. Dre acoustics tackled the Fanny Wang collection." Copy, coincidence, or crafty PR strategy? You be the judge... for now.Monster sues Fanny Wang, purveyor of fine knockoff headphones originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 10:10:00 EDT. Adblock Plus for Chrome coming soon

Adblock is already available for Chrome, and is working very well for us so far. But now Adblock Plus, of Firefox fame, may be joining making the jump to Google's browser platform.

AdBlock Plus' developer, Wladimir Palant, has had lots of time to convert the extension; after all, Chrome isn't exactly new. But so far, Palant has been reluctant to do the porting, due to the amount of work required and Chrome's limited blocking capabilities. Times have changed however, as according to TechCrunch, Adblock Plus is on its way. It won't be a complete re-write apparently, but based on an existing extension called AdThwart.

From an end user's point of view, having Adblock Plus for Chrome might not make a huge difference. After all, the existing options for Chrome do get the job done. But when you step back and look at the big picture, this is one more indication of the rapid rise of Chrome as a browser platform, and now, an OS.Adblock Plus for Chrome coming soon originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 06:15:00 EST. All Internet Explorer versions affected by newly-discovered critical flaw

Microsoft has posted a new security bulletin which describes a critical flaw in Internet Explorer which -- wait for it -- could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on a compromised computer. The flaw affects all supported versions of IE and occurs because of "the creation of uninitialized memory during a CSS function within Internet Explorer."

Vista and Windows 7 users are at less risk than those on XP because of their OS's Protected Mode, which would limit the attacker's access rights. Microsoft suggests using EMET (Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit) to protect all Internet Explorer processes -- but it's a tool designed for admins, not the average home user.

While there's no timetable given for an official fix, Microsoft has already begun working with security providers to ensure that additional protection can be delivered via definition updates. They also, of course, recommend running all Windows Updates, making sure your firewall is turned on, and having a good, up-to-date antimalware program installed. All Internet Explorer versions affected by newly-discovered critical flaw originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 07:30:00 EST. Season's Warnings helps you avoid being scammed online during the holidays

It's a bit more intense reading than Google's Teach Parents Tech series, but Season's Warnings from Trend Micro is definitely something your less-techy friends and family members should read. Trend's guide covers several important topics, like phishing, giveaway scams, and wireless security. While it's only a dozen pages long, there's still plenty of good information inside that will help your loved ones avoid scammy emails, websites which try to steal their login credentials, and misleading search engine results.

Season's Warnings also reminds you to carefully look over your bank statements. If you've been doing a lot of online purchasing and may have registered yourself for a free iPad or two, it's good idea to double-check your records to make sure everything appears as it should.

The Flash-powered pamphlet is bit awkward, however -- so it might be a good idea to print a copy (either on paper or to a PDF printer) to make it easier to read.Season's Warnings helps you avoid being scammed online during the holidays originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 09:30:00 EST. Send hilarious, personalized Santa messages with Google Voice

Ho ho ho! I remember, when I was 8, Santa called my father's mobile phone. He had a message for me, and it blew my mind. A few years later, my dad told me it was his best friend, and he had bought a new SIM card just so I couldn't trace the number! Ah, the lengths adults go to preserve the magic of Santa Claus.

Today, things just got a whole lot easier. If you want to create a personalized message for a (younger) special someone, there's the Google Voice-powered Send A Personalized Call From Santa. There are hundreds of options to choose from -- more than enough to convince the recipient that it's a message just for them -- and most of them are hilarious. Once you're done, you can send it as a phone call (in the US only, alas), by email, or simply grab a URL.

Check out my message from Santa if you want to hear a sample of what this piece of awesomeness can produce. I love how it correctly synthesizes my name.

If you don't have someone to send a Santa message to, please give the link to any friends and family that do have children. McDonalds hacked, customer database stolen, your burger preference now in the wild

Don't worry, this one isn't quite as bad as the Gawker hack: McDonalds -- and over 100 other firms -- have had their marketing databases compromised, and summarily stolen. An email marketing company called Silverpop is to blame for the breach -- and fortunately, 'only' real names, interests and email addresses were breached; no passwords, and no Social Security or credit card numbers were stolen.

While McDonalds is probably the biggest name on the list, it seems the creative users of deviantART are also affected -- and a brief look at Silverpop's site suggests it might have upset some other very big names, such as Mazda and the banking giant Santander.

There's no information about how the hack was achieved, but the FBI has said that the attack originated from outside the US. In all likelihood, the attack was probably carried out by spammers, or the operatives of spammers. An email address database the size of Silverpop's would sell for millions.McDonalds hacked, customer database stolen, your burger preference now in the wild originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 15 Dec 2010 07:30:00 EST. Firefox 4 beta 3 for Android hands on: Mozilla browser hits the Market

Mozilla has released a new beta of Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo to keep the mobile browser in step with its desktop cousin, and it packs a number of important improvements. Perhaps the most noticeable one on Android is that you can now find Firefox in the Market, meaning future updates will be a smoother process -- just make sure you uninstall any previous beta versions before downloading from the Market.

So what's new in Firefox 4 beta 3?

Improved support for both software and hardware keyboards
Android-style menus
Better integration with other apps when opening a link
A save page-as-PDF option
Improved Firefox Sync with new 'add a device' feature
Full screen video and improved audio support
Copy and paste support in the URL bar
Developer access to a localStorage API and orientation events

After browsing for a while with beta 3, I'm definitely left feeling it's faster than the previous non-Market release. Some pages, however, still load about 30-40% slower than they do in Dolphin Mini (my current browser of choice). The new features are definitely key additions -- especially basics like keyboard support and copy/paste in the URL bar. Firefox Sync setup is an absolute breeze now, thanks to the 'add a device' option in both the desktop and mobile versions.

Firefox 4 is also a bit of a space hog, currently consuming about 21MB -- ten times more than Dolphin Mini. And while I dig the desktop-to-mobile Firefox 4 synchronicity, I'm not sure it's enough to make me switch just yet. If I start doing more mobile surfing (which would make Sync more useful to me) and Mozilla kicks up the speed and trims a little fat, Firefox 4 will definitely be a strong contender for the coveted default browser crown.

Check out the gallery, or if you want to jump right in, use the QR code after the break. For more information, release notes and troubleshooting tips, check the Firefox Beta for Mobile website.

Iain Sinclair Poco Pro: little camcorder, big expectations

The Poco Pro from Iain Sinclair, manufacturers of fine tiny things, is said to be "the world's thinnest" 1080p HD pocket camcorder. Poco's specs tout dimensions of 54 x 85.6 x 5mm, much smaller than JVC's Picsio, Samsung's HMX-E10, and even Toshiba's Camileo, but we are definitely wary of image quality on a sensor as small as this one. We're not entirely sure we get the purpose of its optional WiFi capabilities, either -- the site claims they're for "wireless data transmission," but we don't know if that's to a PC or some sort of service. If you're dying to find out, you can reserve a Poco of your own for £100, or about $155, but be patient, this little guy won't hit the market until June.Iain Sinclair Poco Pro: little camcorder, big expectations originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 09:40:00 EDT. Three password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hack

Sure, it's fun to post comments on websites and converse with your fellow readers, but there's always a little danger involved. Why? Because sometimes the sites where you post those comments rile up the wrong people and wind up with a big security breach -- like the one at Gawker.

One of the biggest lessons to be learned from the Gawker fiasco is this: don't use the same password everywhere.

But remembering all those different passwords is hard, yo!

Yes, it is -- but there are secure tools you can use which make it so you don't have to do the remembering yourself. Apps like LastPass, OnePassword, and KeePass make creating and utilizing complex, secure passwords a trivial task. All you need to do is pick an app, create an account, and set up one really good password you can remember to protect it. Your password manager will take care of the memorizing.

Take the jump to see how easy it can be to better protect your logins online!Continue reading Three password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hackThree password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hack originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. Rogue antivirus apps now masquerading as utility software, too

Once upon a time, rogue antivirus apps were pretty much one-trick ponies. They tried to closely mimic the interfaces we recognize from apps like AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials and use goofily-combined names like Super Windows Antivirus 2010 Gold Pro. However, as Sunbelt reports on their official blog, malware authors are now branching out into other types of bogus apps in order to lure more users into their trap.

To the trained eye, everything about PCoptimizer 2010 looks suspicious -- from the Intel Inside decal to the "Register Errors" text. The unwary Windows user, however, could be tricked just as easily by this trainwreck of a rogue app as her or she could be by a convincing antivirus clone.

Your best defense, of course, is to arm yourself with knowledge and look before you leap. Real, quality utility programs tend not to use flashy pop-up advertisements, make sensational sounding claims about fixing thousands of errors in your registry, and they usually use the correct terms. Register errors? I think you mean registry errors, Captain Scammy.

If you really need a few apps to keep your Windows system running in tip-top shape, check out this collection of six handy tools and our more recent rundown of 15+ trustworthy programs.Rogue antivirus apps now masquerading as utility software, too originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 16:30:00 EST. However, The Dream Act -- which would have cleared the way for legalizing young undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country before the age of 16, lived here continuously for at least five years, and who either go to college or enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces -- failed. Host Michel Martin talks to political observers, who weigh in on recent decisions made by a busy Congress.

Take the jump to see how easy it can be to better protect your logins online!Continue reading Three password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hackThree password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hack originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. iPad 2 features a thinner bezel, flat back, and chunky wide-range speaker?

Nothing says truthiness quite like anonymous Chinese sources telling next generation iPad secrets to a Japanese blog lacking any notable successes on the professional rumor mongering circuit. Nevertheless, the Apple rumor sites have jumped all over the story like a Bay Area cop on prototype thief. So here's the dirt, which certainly seems plausible in its specificity: a 3-mm reduction in bezel width, same 9.7-inch display size, and flattening of the back allowing it to rest wobble-free on a desktop. Mac Otakara also explains that there's a "wide-range speaker" covered with "metal mesh" (that's their render above) occupying the cut-out we saw at the bottom of those supposed next-generation iPad cases. The overall unit is said to measure 239 x 186 mm compared to the current iPad's 242.8 x 189.7 mm footprint. Suspiciously, the site was unable to reliably confirm the existence of front of rear facing cameras but does claim that the new iPads will begin shipping from factories in January -- timing that aligns nicely with previous rumors. After the break you'll find another purported iPad 2 case with yet another render of the speaker grill design.Continue reading iPad 2 features a thinner bezel, flat back, and chunky wide-range speaker?iPad 2 features a thinner bezel, flat back, and chunky wide-range speaker? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 03:04:00 EDT.
