33Needs Brings Crowdsourced Funding To Social Startups

The crowdsourced funding craze is picking up steam. Tonight we see the launch of 33needs, a site where socially-minded startups can raise initial seed funding from individual contributors on the Web. It is Kiva meets Kickstarter.

Social startups post their "needs" in terms of how much money they are looking to raise, what problems they are going to solve and how they are going to do it, along with a video to help spread the word virally. People can invest $10, $100, $1,000 or more, and in return instead of getting shares in the company, they get a promised percentage of revenues for a specified period of time like 5 percent of revenues for three years.

Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets revealed in new video

Major news from Google just hit at CES: Android 3.0, dubbed Honeycomb, has been revealed. It might be a leak, but the video is very well made and looks quite solid. While a new Android version is always a big deal, this leak is made all the more significant by the platform's apparent shift in focus. It's all about the tablets now.

While Android for phones is certainly not going away, the Honeycomb video features a bold statement, "Built Entirely for Tablet." And the UI really shows it, as you can see in the screencap above. Gmail looks different, but that's just one change. The whole interface underwent a radical change, to work with the tablet form factor. Other highlights from the video:

A 3D-looking task switcher
A massive software keyboard, quite reminiscent of a certain tablet that shall remain nameless (ahem)
Rich widgets on a roomy homescreen -- the Gmail widget looks basically like the current Gmail app
A strong emphasis on Google Books, including "live" widgets (scroll through books on the widget)
A tabbed browser, looking vaguely Chrome-like
A panorama-like view of YouTube with a 3D "wall" of thumbnails
Video-enabled Gtalk
Solid zoom-and-pan action with the new Maps app, including 3D buildings. This seems similar to Maps v5, but it looks so much better on a tablet.
Lots of futuristic-looking neon text

Exciting times indeed! Now let's see a review unit.Continue reading Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets revealed in new videoGoogle's Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets revealed in new video originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 17:30:00 EST. Google adds 35 more Web fonts to Blogger

Web fonts have been available to Blogger users since late last year, when Google introduced 32 ready-to-use typefaces to spice up your blog's design. Now, Google has more than doubled that number -- bringing the total to a whopping 77 fonts, all of which render nicely in just about any Web browser. No, they don't work in IE6.

You'll find the new fonts in the Blogger Template Designer behind the advanced tab. Choose a font, and Blogger will give you a preview to help you decide whether or not you want to make the switch. The full list of available fonts is posted here, and you can also browse them in the Google Font Directory.

Intel briefly shows off Medfield-based smartphone

Intel promised way back in 2009 that we'd be seeing Medfield-based smartphones in 2011, and it looks like those have now gotten one step closer to reality. While there's unfortunately few details to be had, that's apparently a Medfield-based smartphone of some sort in the hand of Intel's Anand Chandrasekher above, who apparently showed off the phone (possibly a prototype) ever so briefly at the company's sales and marketing conference last week. Could it be a sign of things to come at MWC next month? Study shocker! Mobile users piddle around on the internet while watching TV

Shocker of shockers, folks: people do more than just watch TV when they're watching TV. A study of over 8,000 willing individuals from Nielsen and Yahoo recently discovered that some 86 percent of mobile internet users tinker around on their devices while situated in front of the tube. It seems that Googling random facts, checking their Facebook news feed and seeing who has tweeted in the past 30 seconds were atop the list of activities to do while watching, but strangely, a full 20 percent confessed to search for more information about a commercial they recently saw. Hit the source link below (PDF) to be instantly bombarded with facts and figures, but first, refresh that TweetCaster feed. Ah, so much better.Study shocker! Kinect 3D Viewer now available in Mac App Store, but don't get too excited

The first Kinect app has just popped up in the Mac App Store, but unfortunately it does exactly what its name suggests. Kinect 3D Viewer lets you... view the output from the Kinect depth-sensing camera... in 3D!

It actually has two output options: you can either see a 3D point cloud, which excellently shows off the resolution of depth detection, or you can "view yourself in 3D", which looks very similar to the proof-of-concept Linux/Kinect hacks that we saw in November. There's no information about how the Kinect integration was achieved, but presumably the developers used a Mac port of libfreenect.

Hopefully there will be a follow-up app that actually does something -- but having said that, how many Mac users with Xbox 360s can there possibly be?Kinect 3D Viewer now available in Mac App Store, but don't get too excited originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 06:30:00 EST. How to make only part of a cell bold in Microsoft Excel

This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

By default, when you click a cell in Excel and hit Ctrl+B or the B button on the toolbar, the entire text of the cell becomes bold. However, sometimes you may want to make just part of the text bold, and not the whole thing.

To do this, simply start editing the cell by hitting F2. Select the text you'd like to make bold, and hit Ctrl+B. This will make only this part of the cell bold.

You can use this same technique to color specific words in the cell: Select one or two words while editing a cell, and use the Font Color button to change their color. How to make only part of a cell bold in Microsoft Excel originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 10 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. GNOME 3 website now live, tries a bit too hard to be cool, looks like Unity

New, clean-and-simple HTML5 websites are obviously in this week: GNOME, one of the most popular desktop environments for Linux, has just released a new website to celebrate the features of version 3, which will be released in April.

With phrases like "SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL" and "DISTRACTION-FREE COMPUTING" plastered all over the site it's obvious that GNOME not only likes capital letters, but that it's also trying to capitalize on the recent movement towards simpler, less-shiny interfaces. GNOME 3 now has a slogan, too -- "made of easy" -- which, to be honest, feels like it's trying a bit too hard to be cool.

As to GNOME 3's actual features, there's built-in messaging (which presumably works with most IM protocols), and a new notifications system. The system settings panel has been overhauled, and the Windows key has been commandeered to provide quick access to your system: just hit the Windows key and start typing -- like Windows 7 or Vista.

Before we finish, does anyone else think that GNOME 3 looks a lot like Canonical's new Unity? There's side-by-side images of them after the break. GNOME 3's release coincides with Ubuntu 11.04, incidentally -- but, just to reiterate, while Unity will be the default desktop environment in Ubuntu, users will be free to switch to either GNOME or Unity 2D.

If you can't wait until its stable release in April, and you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can build an alpha version of GNOME 3 with JHBuild.Continue reading GNOME 3 website now live, tries a bit too hard to be cool, looks like UnityGNOME 3 website now live, tries a bit too hard to be cool, looks like Unity originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 08:11:00 EST. Homebuilt UAV hunts down hydrogen balloons, shoots firework missiles (video)

Augmented reality is swell, don't get us wrong, but it's no substitute for the real thing -- especially when that thing is a badass tricopter equipped with a jury-rigged firework cannon to rain down miniature hell. Swedish R/C enthusiasts built this first-person flying contraption to carry out a single mission -- destroy a series of hydrogen-filled balloons -- which will hopefully be hard-coded into future automatons too. After all, balloons could serve as an excellent distraction when they inevitably come for you. Still, there's no need to worry quite yet, so kick back and enjoy the video above while you contemplate humanity's end.Homebuilt UAV hunts down hydrogen balloons, shoots firework missiles (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 30 Jan 2011 14:29:00 EDT. When The Drones Come Marching In

Way back in the 1970s, hardware-hacker hobbyists built kit computers like the Altair 8800 ? and in doing so paved the way for the computer revolution that would reshape every facet of modern life. Today the same breed of people are building and selling kit flight controllers for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Just sayin'.

Drones are far from new: the US military has been using them heavily for over a decade. (What else did the US military pioneer, back in the 1970s? Oh, right. The Internet.) UAV tech has long since metastasized around the world. India's private sector builds UAVs for both military and scientific purposes; Lebanon's de facto government Hezbollah has used Iranian-built drones for years; earlier this month, QinetiQ's solar-powered Zephyr set a world record by flying for 2 weeks nonstop; and, of course, the French-built, iPhone-controlled AR.Parrot has brought UAVs to the masses. All awesome, and all innovating fast. At this rate this may well become the Decade of Drones.

Which makes me more than a little uneasy.

Google Chrome dev gets password sync -- again

Google Chrome password sync has been a long time coming, first taking shape in May 2010 Chromium builds. It's popped up before in official Chrome builds, but never appeared to be functional. Now, however, password sync has come back to the Dev Channel -- and it seems to be working for some. On my own system, Chrome's status indicator spun endlessly and I was never able to authenticate -- forcing me to cancel the process and leave my sync options as they were. Sebastian, however, successfully logged in and activated password sync with no problem.

Help save the earth in Survivosaur -- Time Waster

Everybody knows how the dinosaurs became extinct - you know, the big meteor and everything. But did it really have to happen? How would things have gone had you been there, dressed up as a huge dinosaur with a jet-pack and all sorts of projectiles, ready to save the day? Great question, and that's exactly what Survivosaur strives to answer.

The jet-pack is only the beginning here - you, the dino-protagonist, are tricked out to the max with alternative weapons, an optional shield, extra health and more. You use this massive arsenal to shoot at oncoming meteors and explode them in space, thus preventing the extinction of yourself and your kind. But not everything that comes from space is bad - you get bonuses (those little dollars flying in the screenshots), as well as health packs.

Once you amass enough lucre (say, $10), you can hit SPACE and access the in-game accessory store, where you get all of those fancy power-ups I just mentioned. Gameplay is super-simple - you run (or rather, circle the globe) with the arrow keys, and aim and fire with the mouse. But thanks to the power-up system, this game is surprisingly engaging.Help save the earth in Survivosaur -- Time Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. Geolocation app appeals to your inner good samaritan, makes you an amateur EMT

When you go into cardiac arrest, you've got about ten minutes to live if you don't receive medical attention, and the average emergency response time is seven minutes after you dial 911. In an effort to get folks help more quickly and leverage the iPhone's life saving abilities, the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District in California has created the FireDepartment app to enlist the help of the citizenry in fighting the (unfortunate) results of a lifetime of eating tacos. The iPhone app -- Android and BlackBerry versions are currently in the works -- allows emergency dispatchers to notify users via text of a nearby crisis. For those feeling heroic, the app displays a map with the victim's location and any nearby automatic electronic defibrillators, and provides "resuscitation reminders" in case you're the CPR teddy-toting type. For now, the service only works in San Ramon but there are plans to port it for use elsewhere. That means we can look forward to a nation of amateur EMTs, which makes us thankful that mouth-to-mouth is no longer a part of CPR. Check the video after the break to see the app in action.Continue reading Geolocation app appeals to your inner good samaritan, makes you an amateur EMTGeolocation app appeals to your inner good samaritan, makes you an amateur EMT originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 08:59:00 EDT. Notion Ink Adam hits the FCC, torn apart in haste

Although Rohan told us that his Adam tablet had cleared FCC testing a few weeks ago, it's not until today, just now actually, that we've seen the filing go public. For our troubles the FCC has done us the solid of a full-blown teardown. And honestly, it's not pretty. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised to see so many hand-soldered connections and individual strands of wire encompassing the NVIDIA Tegra T20-H-A0 application processor and embedded Ericsson F3307 HSPA broadband module -- it is, after all, the tiny startup's first mass-market device. But we've borne witness to many a splayings including the tidy tablet teardowns of the iPad and Galaxy Tab. As such, the Adam comes across as a bedraggled mess of suspect build quality -- great for modders, less great (potentially) for the average I-just-want-it-to-work consumer. Naturally, NI doesn't have the design or manufacturing muscle of Apple or Samsung and with the tablet having only just now shipped it'll be months before we have a good idea about the device's integrity. So kick back for now with a few of the more egregious components (like the swiveling camera) after the break with the rest piled up in the gallery below.

Cella Energy says its hydrogen microbeads could fuel your car, cost $1.50 per gallon

Your average hydrogen-powered car is a marvel of modern science -- fuel cell sifting electrons out of pure H2 and emitting nothing but water -- powered by big, heavy, high-pressure tanks of gas. Cella Energy is here to ditch the tank, having first developed a means of storing hydrogen in microfibers that could greatly simplify the design of these vehicles. But, perhaps even more impressive is a "synthetic fuel" the company is working on which is, essentially, pure hydrogen captured into microbeads. You know, like the kind that float in your shampoo and give your hair that extra lustre, but explosive. According to Cella these beads can be poured into the gas tank of a car with an internal combustion engine (presumably suspended in some sort of liquid) and, with no modification, that car will run just fine. Best news is that this concoction costs just $1.50 per gallon -- or will, eventually. Supposedly. New adapter from Mitsubishi brings Samsung's old 3D-capable TVs up to spec

Although 3D as a feature didn't become commonplace on HDTVs until 2010, Mitsubishi and Samsung have both been shipping a number of 3D-ready models for several years. However, they rely on a different input format than the one used by 3D Blu-ray movies, 3DTV broadcasts and most 3D videogames so an adapter is required to make it work, which Mitsubishi released for its own DLP TVs last year. While enthusiasts on AVSForum quickly developed workarounds to get them working with some of Samsung's DLPs as well, those won't be necessary now that Mitsubishi is releasing the 3DC-100S, which will work with Samsung's TVs (only projection sets, not plasmas) right out of the box. right now it's available as a part of a $449 MSRP starter pack bundle but word is it should be available on its own shortly, in case you want to check out some ESPN 3D action without shelling out for a brand new TV set, press release is after the break.

Spotify secures deal with Sony BMG, moves closer to U.S. launch

Spotify, at long last, and after monumentally failing to hit is initial U.S. launch deadline of 'before 2011,' has finally signed one of the big four music labels.

Sony BMG, which represents 25% of the U.S. music market, is second only to the Universal Music Group. To enter the U.S. successfully, though, Spotify needs to secure at least Universal, and preferably both Warner and EMI too. There is no information about whether Spotify is close to closing deals with any other labels.

Microsoft's Zune, incidentally, has been available in the U.S. for some time. Zune, however, doesn't have a free option. Spotify lets anyone listen to up to 20 hours of music per week, absolutely free, with two levels of subscription: a £5/month option (which will probably be $5, if it launches in the U.S.) which removes the ads, and a £10/month option that both removes the ads, and lets you listen to your entire Spotify collection on your smartphone.Spotify secures deal with Sony BMG, moves closer to U.S. launch originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST.

Slash Boom is a fun, easy physics time waster

Slash Boom is one of the easier time-wasters I've played recently, but I still enjoyed it. The rules are very simple: Your goal is to blow most of the structure off the screen. At each level, you get two "slashes" and one "boom". The "slashes" are click-and-drag motions you make across the structure, which cut it. Once you've placed two strategic cuts, it's time for the "boom": simply click anywhere on the screen to strategically detonate a bomb.

You can either click on the structure itself or next to it; if you placed your "slashes" strategically enough and picked a good spot for the bomb, a significant chunk of the structure will fly off the screen.

You will probably fly through the first few levels, but then the shapes become a bit more complex, and the game gets harder. I like it that they made the game harder by making more "difficult" shapes, rather than just making them larger (and thus more difficult to explode off the screen).

Bottom line: It's a quick, fun brain-teaser.Slash Boom is a fun, easy physics time waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kaspersky Pure simplifies, centralizes home virus protection and backups

Keeping the computers on your home network can be a messy business, but Kaspersky has a solution which can make things a bit easier to manage. Their re-tooled Pure Total Security suite offers full-spectrum network protection from malware defense to backups to parental controls.

Pure packs a ton of functionality, including malware protection, firewall, spam and phishing protection, backup and restore functions, parental controls, a password manager and secure data vault, and a file shredder. However, Pure's most interesting new feature is that it lets you manage all your Kaspersky-protected systems from one location. You can adjust settings, run scans or backups, and monitor parental control activity on any system from the dashboard on your main PC.

Pure Total Security will cost you $89.95 to cover three systems for one year -- protection for five systems is $149.95. The premise of the game is simple: It's a physics shooter, the type where you have to set off one or more explosive charges to blow all the blocks off the board. Minimize all inactive windows in Windows 7 with a quick keyboard shortcut

This week, we're running a series of keyboard tips and tricks that help you make the most of Windows 7. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

Sometimes you may find yourself in the middle of a working day with your desktop cluttered by a zillion open windows. This can be distracting and make it difficult to focus on what you're doing right now. If you like using your mouse, you could use Aero Shake; just click the title bar of the window you're trying to focus on, and "shake" it around (move it from side to side quickly). All other windows would minimize, and you'd be left with just the window you want to see. But since this series is about the keyboard, here's how you do it without touching the mouse: hit Win+Home and every inactive window instantly minimizes. Presto! [Hitting Win+Home again un-minimizes every window! -Ed]

Come back tomorrow for the next keyboard tip, or, if you'd like to read a whole bunch at once, check out Sebastian's epic list.

Vid.ly offers cloud-powered universal video transcoding for free

Vid.ly, a one-stop shop for uploading, transcoding and sharing video content for all screen-sizes and devices, has just come online. You'll need a beta key to sign up, which you can freely obtain from Mashable, TechCrunch or hacks.mozilla.org.

In essence, Vid.ly simply lets you upload a raw movie, and await an email notification to tell you that the upload and transcode has been completed. You can watch the process if you like, but other than a progress bar and a cute "console" style log, there isn't much to see. Not only does Vid.ly generate 14 very different versions of your uploaded video, but it also gives you a universal embed code, which serves up the best video format for the end-user. Visit the Vid.ly link in Firefox, and you get an HTML5 Ogg Theora stream -- but if you visit with IE8, you get a Flash video stream. If you're curious, check out our test upload on your desktop and smartphone.

Vid.ly also has the rather neat ability to transfer files that are already in the cloud -- or on FTP dumps -- into the Vid.ly transcoder. There are plans to provide an API, so that you can skip the website entirely -- but that will require the 'pro' version, which isn't currently available.

The best thing about Vid.ly is that it just works -- but considering it's a sister site of the excellent Encoding.com, that shouldn't really come as a surprise. What you're looking at here is possibly the most useful application of cloud processing power yet, and judging by the interview at hacks.mozilla.org with Encoding.com's president, there's a lot of cool things still to come.

Call of Duty 4 hits Mac App Store at overpriced $50, a sign of things to come?

And so the Apple-related price gouging hilarity begins: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, originally released in 2008, and available for $32 on Amazon, is now available from the Mac App Store for $50.

CoD4 is perhaps the first example of a 'killer app' for the Mac App Store, and exactly the injection of big-name awesomeness that it will need to attract other games publishers, and software giants like Adobe and Microsoft. CoD4 might be a little old, but given the awful Cold War-era graphics cards available in most Macs, it's probably a good idea that Modern Warfare 2 wasn't released first.

It should also be noted that this isn't the first time that a digitally-distributed game is more expensive than a boxed version from Amazon. Steam is regularly more expensive than Amazon (though not usually by such a margin), and World of Warcraft bought directly from Blizzard as a digital download is more expensive than buying a box from Amazon, or your local games shop.

What remains to be seen, though, is whether software on the Mac App Store will be aggressively discounted like on Steam. The whole point of digital distribution is that you can sell something for almost-free, and still turn a profit. Let's just hope that the Mac App Store doesn't become another place for Apple to gouge its users for more money -- digital downloads are convenient, but they really should be cheaper than their real world counterparts.Call of Duty 4 hits Mac App Store at overpriced $50, a sign of things to come? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 05:20:00 EST. Google Voice will let you port your current phone number for $20 -- soon

One reason users shy away from Google Voice -- or any alternative calling solution -- is because they can't bring their existing phone number with them. That could all be about to change, however, as several users happened upon an option to port their number to Google Voice. After checking to make sure Google is able to port a given mobile number, a $20 payment via Google Checkout is all that's required.

The option has apparently disappeared overnight, with Google telling our friends at Engadget that number porting is currently being tested with a small group of Google Voice users.

Facebook Desktop brings every notification to Windows and Mac and Linux!

Created by a computer scientist at Adobe, Facebook Desktop does exactly what it says on the tin, for both Windows and Mac PCs. It links into your Facebook account and notifies you of every change to your account -- pokes, messages, friend requests, event invites, etc. -- with a little pop-up toast window on your desktop. The notifications appear in the bottom right of your screen whether you like it or not -- you can't change it to another corner, and you can't change their appearance.

Still, Facebook Desktop works. Beyond notifications, it also lets you publish status updates -- but as you have to go via a tiny system tray icon, and there's no way to set a global hotkey, it's probably easier to just pop open a browser window and update your status normally.

The only problem -- for some people, anyway -- is that Facebook Desktop is an Adobe AIR app. It's advertised as "lightweight", but a 45MB memory footprint for an app that pops up toast windows seems a little on the chunky side. By default it loads on computer start-up, too, which is a bit obnoxious -- you can disable that in the settings, though.

Oh, it also requests a truly insane number of permissions when connecting to your Facebook account (picture after the break). Understandably, it needs to check a lot of things, but it doesn't need permission to publish check-ins, or insight data for my Pages. Heck, why does it even need my name, profile picture and gender?Continue reading Facebook Desktop brings every notification to Windows and Mac and Linux!Facebook Desktop brings every notification to Windows and Mac and Linux! originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 15 Jan 2011 06:23:00 EST.
