Creative Ziio 7- and 10-inch Android tablets say 'me too'
Somewhere in the world, Creative just announced a pair of 7-inch (480 x 800) and 10-inch (1024 x 768) Ziio tablets running the Android 2.1 OS. Both feature a ZiiLabs ZMS-08 processor, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, WiFi 802.11b/g, and microSD expansion. They're slated to ship in December with the 7-incher costing €229 (8GB) or €259 (16GB) and the 10-incher demanding €289 (8GB) or €319 (16GB). And somewhere, somebody must be jonesin' for these resistive touchscreen tablets (China?), just not here.

Skype 5 with Facebook integration sheds beta tag
Filed under: Utilities, Video
Skype has just announced Version 5 for Windows. This version has been in beta for quite some time, and it's now officially out. Amongst the new features:
Group video - which is still labeled "beta," even though the app itself is final
Automatically recovering dropped calls - Skype redials the other party; from our experience, it sometimes intentionally drops the call when the connection is really bad, and then it redials to try and get a better connection.
Facebook integration -- you can call or chat with Facebook friends directly from Skype.
If you've been using the beta version, none of this is overly exciting. But if you're still using Skype 4.0, this is certainly a worthy upgrade.Skype 5 with Facebook integration sheds beta tag originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 07:00:00 EST. iOS 4.2 goes gold, available now to developers (updated)
The iPad's ticket to multitasking freedom -- better known as iOS 4.2 -- has moves past the beta phase and onto GM, which means retail units should be seeing it soon. Besides the iPad, Apple is also providing builds for the second, third, and fourth generations of the iPod touch, along with the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4... so if you've got a friend with an iPhone Developer Program subscription, now would be a great time to get cozy.
Update: Apple made some last minute tweaks that give fast access to brightness, volume, and AirPlay controls right in the multitasking bar (pictured after the break). Apple's also on the verge of allowing MobileMe service logins using an Apple ID.

3G Kindle a hit on the Chinese gray market for its ability to bypass the 'Great Firewall'?
A report this morning from the South China Morning Post claims that Amazon's 3G-boasting Kindle is selling fast on the so-called "gray" market in China because of its 3G internet connectivity and browser. The device, it seems, offers the Chinese a rare opportunity to side-step the "great Firewall" of the Chinese government, which restricts access to sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Amazon does not officially sell the Kindle in China, which has the world's largest internet-connected population at 420 million. The Kindle, which seems to have been overlooked by the Chinese authorities thus far, makes use of Amazon's own network, Whispernet.3G Kindle a hit on the Chinese gray market for its ability to bypass the 'Great Firewall'? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 14:51:00 EDT. Li-ion Motors INIZIO: all-electric supercar hitting 170 mph next year, all yours for $139k
Tesla, schmesla. This, friends, is the electric vehicle that your garage has been waiting for. Designed by North Carolina's own Li-ion Motors, the downright stunning INIZIO is being hailed as the world's first all American-made electric supercar, and while the Roadster is definitely peppy, it ain't got nothing on this. Using the company's own lithium-ion battery technology and management system, the car can purportedly cruise for up to 250 miles on electricity alone, and it can hit a top speed of 170 miles per hour without breaking a sweat. Naturally, you won't (legally) fit more than two humans into this thing at once, but those two individuals will enjoy adjustable, leather / suede Recaro seating with heating and cooling features, an inbuilt 12-inch subwoofer, digital surround sound system, integrated navigation system, DVD player and rotational doors that raise on a 90-degree angle. Oh, and they'll probably drool a little after racing from zero to sixty in 3.4 face-numbing seconds. The company also adds that it emits no carbon emissions, can be recharged over 2,500 times and can go from drained to rejuvenated after just eight hours on the plug. It's expected to launch in mid-2011 with a starting price of $139,000, or just a few pennies more than the current value of the wretched Carolina Panthers franchise.Continue reading Li-ion Motors INIZIO: all-electric supercar hitting 170 mph next year, all yours for $139kLi-ion Motors INIZIO: all-electric supercar hitting 170 mph next year, all yours for $139k originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 20:12:00 EDT. Flattr Starts To Monetise Its Like Button For Content
In a post back in July we asked, "Is Flattr the new Facebook Like, but this time with real money?". With 342 comments, that post got a LOT of discussion going. And it's even being used by the controversial Wikileaks whistle-blowing site.
Now they are releasing data which suggests the service is starting to pick up at a clip.
Flattr started testing with alpha users back in February, but went public in August.
Now, two months after going public, it says it has garnered over 46,056 registered users with over ?114,057 ($158,438) of "flattrs" passing through the system. It now also has Twitter and Facebook integration which should really start to get the platform motoring.

Phras.in helps you decide which of two words you should use
Filed under: Text, Utilities, Education
Here's something that I do all the time: when I want to know how to use a certain word or phrase, I just google it. And when I'm trying to decide on one of two options, I just google them both and see which one is more common, or how it works in a sentence. I use it a lot when I translate ("do people really say that?"), but I also use it when I just write in English.
And now, Phras.in lets me do the exact same thing, but I can do it in style (or is it "with style"? Exactly!) and a great deal faster. So, I just type the words "in style" in the top text box, and then I type "with style" in the bottom text box. By the time I'm done typing, I can see that "in style" got 43.4 million hits, while "with style" has only 23.5 million hits. The search is live, and it's super-fast; there's no Enter required. And clearly, "in style" wins.
But maybe I'm not sure, or I want to see how they're really used. I just have to hit the big Contextualize 'em button, and I get a whole bunch of Google results that show the phrases in their natural habitat.
It even works in Hebrew, so I guess it can handle pretty much anything that you throw at it (anything Google can handle, that is). It's very, very useful!Phras.in helps you decide which of two words you should use originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 24 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST.
